Can You Walk from Domestic to International at Sydney Airport?

You cannot walk between Sydney Airport’s Domestic terminals and the International terminal. Learn how T1, T2 and T3 are connected, which transfer options are available, how long they take and what to consider when making a connecting flight.
Can You Walk from Domestic to International at Sydney Airport?
No. Sydney Airport advises that passengers cannot walk between the Domestic terminals and the International terminal. T1 International and the T2/T3 Domestic precinct are separate, so you need a bus, train, taxi, rideshare or an eligible airline transfer service to move between them.

There is one important distinction: T2 and T3 are walkable from each other. A pedestrian path connects the two Domestic terminals, and the walk takes approximately five minutes. That pedestrian connection does not extend to T1 International.

Why You Cannot Walk Between the Domestic and International Terminals

Sydney Airport has three passenger terminals. T1 is the International terminal, while T2 and T3 serve domestic flights. The International and Domestic precincts are located a short ride apart rather than being connected by a passenger walking route.

This distinction matters when planning a connection. Seeing T1, T2 and T3 described as terminals of the same airport can make them appear similar to adjoining concourses that can be reached on foot. At Sydney Airport, that assumption is incorrect.

The exception is entirely within the Domestic precinct. If you need to move between T2 and T3, you can use the designated pedestrian path and allow roughly five minutes for the walk. If your journey involves T1, plan on using transport instead.

How the Terminal Transfer Options Compare

The most straightforward free option is Sydney Airport's Terminal Transfer Bus. It operates between T1 International and T2/T3 Domestic every 15 minutes from 5:30 am to 10:30 pm, with the trip itself taking approximately 10 minutes.

The Airport Link train is faster once you are aboard. The rail journey between the International and Domestic stations takes about two minutes, with frequent services operating from approximately 5:00 am until midnight, seven days a week. Unlike the airport shuttle, the train is a paid service.

Taxi and rideshare services are also available between the precincts. These can be useful when travelling with several people or significant luggage, but road travel is affected by traffic and requires getting to the appropriate pick-up location.

Sydney Buses Route 420 is another public-transport option connecting the International and Domestic terminals. Because it is a scheduled public bus rather than a dedicated airport-transfer service, it may be less convenient for a time-sensitive flight connection.

Using the Free Terminal Transfer Bus

For many passengers, the Terminal Transfer Bus provides the simplest answer to the domestic-to-international transfer because there is no fare and it serves all three terminals.

From T1 International, the bus leaves from the Arrivals level outside Arrival Hall B. From T2 and T3, the transfer stops are on the Arrivals level outside each terminal.

The service runs every 15 minutes and the journey between precincts takes about 10 minutes. Those numbers describe the scheduled bus frequency and driving time, not the complete connection. You may also need time to leave your arriving terminal, reach the bus stop, wait for the next service and enter the departure terminal.

The operating window is another important boundary. Because the complimentary transfer runs between 5:30 am and 10:30 pm, passengers transferring outside that period need another available option rather than assuming the free shuttle operates around the clock.

Taking the Train, Taxi, Rideshare or Public Bus

The train is especially useful when transfer speed and predictability matter. The Airport Link connects the stations serving T1 and the Domestic precinct, and the actual rail journey takes only about two minutes.

You still need to account for walking to the station, reaching the platform and waiting for a train, so a two-minute train ride does not mean the entire terminal change takes two minutes.

Taxi and rideshare remove the need to follow a rail timetable, but their travel time can vary with road conditions. These can be practical alternatives when the shuttle schedule is unsuitable or when handling baggage makes public transport inconvenient.

Route 420 can also carry passengers between the International and Domestic precincts. It can be a lower-cost option, but a public bus is generally less attractive for a tight connection because the service is not dedicated solely to terminal transfers.

Passengers flying with Qantas or Virgin Australia may also be eligible for an airline transfer service. Eligibility depends on the flight and airline arrangements, so check directly with your airline rather than assuming the service applies to every booking.

How Much Time Should You Allow for a Connecting Flight?

Do not calculate your connection using only the vehicle's journey time. A 10-minute shuttle ride or two-minute train trip represents only one part of moving from a domestic flight to an international departure.

The full connection may involve leaving the arriving aircraft, collecting baggage if required, reaching ground transport, waiting for the transfer, travelling to T1, checking in or dropping bags and completing international departure procedures.

Sydney Airport does not publish one universal minimum connection time for every domestic-to-international connection. The appropriate minimum depends on the airline, ticket arrangement, baggage handling and itinerary.

Baggage arrangements are particularly important. Whether checked baggage is transferred automatically depends on the airline and itinerary. Confirm this with your airline or travel agent before travelling.

The reverse journey can require additional processing. Passengers arriving internationally and transferring to a domestic flight must collect their luggage and complete passport-control and quarantine requirements before transferring to the Domestic terminal.

For a connection, use your airline's required connection time as the controlling figure and treat the airport transfer duration as only one component of it.

You cannot walk from Sydney Airport's Domestic terminals to the International terminal, or from T1 International to T2/T3 Domestic. Use the complimentary Terminal Transfer Bus, Airport Link train, taxi, rideshare, Route 420 or an eligible airline transfer service instead. Only T2 and T3 are connected by a pedestrian route, taking approximately five minutes.

For a connecting flight, do not rely solely on the quoted bus or train travel time. Check your airline's transfer requirements, baggage arrangements and minimum connection guidance so that the complete terminal change fits safely within your itinerary.
