How Do Taxis Work at Sydney Airport?

Sydney Airport taxi ranks are outside T1, T2 and T3. Learn how to find a cab, use the fixed CBD fare and understand metered trips elsewhere.
How Do Taxis Work at Sydney Airport?
You can take a taxi from the signed rank outside any Sydney Airport terminal without arranging a ride in advance. Where you are going determines whether your fare follows the airport-to-CBD fixed-fare trial or the usual metered system.

Where do you catch a taxi at Sydney Airport?

Each of Sydney Airport’s three terminals has a sheltered taxi rank outside the arrivals area. Once you have collected your bags and left the terminal, follow the signs marked “Taxi”. T1 serves international flights, while T2 and T3 serve domestic flights.

Terminal

Where to go

What to expect

T1 International

Follow Taxi signs from the arrivals area to the designated rank outside the terminal.

Join the taxi queue and take the next suitable available vehicle.

T2 Domestic

Exit the arrivals area and follow the signs to the terminal’s taxi rank.

Staff may help direct passengers and arrange a suitable cab.

T3 Domestic

Use the signed taxi rank outside the arrivals area.

The process is the same as at the other terminals.

Airport kerbside supervisors assist at busy times. They can help find a vehicle for passengers with substantial luggage, a larger group or particular accessibility needs. Regular taxis should collect passengers from the designated ranks rather than from an arbitrary kerbside location.

How does taxi pick-up work after you land?

  • Collect your checked luggage and go through the relevant arrivals procedures.
  • Follow the Taxi signs to the official rank for your terminal; do not follow rideshare or public pick-up signs instead.
  • Join the queue and tell the supervisor if you need a larger vehicle, a wheelchair-accessible taxi or a child restraint.
  • Tell the driver your destination and, if relevant, confirm that it lies within the designated CBD fixed-fare area.
  • Check the fare shown on the meter and any permitted payment surcharge before completing your journey.

A taxi rank operates on a queue system, so you normally do not need to find a particular driver or provide an app PIN. Waiting times will depend on passenger demand and the availability of suitable vehicles.

Four steps to taking a taxi at Sydney Airport

How much does a Sydney Airport taxi cost?

Fixed fares from the airport to the designated Sydney CBD area

Under an 18-month NSW Government trial scheduled from 3 November 2025 to 2 May 2027, an uninterrupted, non-booked taxi trip from an official Sydney Airport rank to a destination within the designated Sydney CBD trial area has a fixed maximum fare. The trial covers departures from T1, T2 and T3 taxi ranks.

Taxi used

Fixed airport-to-CBD fare

When it applies

Standard taxi

AU$60

Direct trip from an airport rank to an address inside the defined CBD trial area.

Wheelchair-accessible taxi

AU$60

Same CBD journey, including services for a person using a wheelchair.

Maxi taxi

AU$80

Where five or more passengers travel, or a passenger specifically requests a maxi taxi at the rank, subject to the wheelchair-accessibility exception.

These fixed fares include applicable taxes, airport charges, levies and road tolls. A permitted non-cash payment surcharge or cleaning fee may still apply. Drivers cannot add an airport toll or road toll on top of the fixed fare.

The CBD trial area has defined geographical boundaries; it does not cover every Sydney suburb or every address casually described as “close to the city”. Check the official trial-area map if your destination is near its edge. The fixed fare is for qualifying journeys from the airport, not a general return-trip fare from the CBD to the airport.

Metered fares to other destinations

For trips outside the designated CBD area, the taxi meter calculates the applicable regulated distance-based fare. Travel time, traffic delays, the route taken and permitted additional charges can affect the amount payable. An airport access charge or toll may be included among the permitted charges for a metered journey; ask the driver to explain any item you do not recognise.

The CBD fixed-fare trial does not apply to pre-booked passenger services, including separately booked airport transfers and rideshare. Those services follow the booking terms or agreed quote instead.

Do you need to book a taxi before arriving?

No. For a normal airport taxi, walk to the official rank and take an available vehicle. This is often the simplest approach when your arrival time is uncertain, as no driver rendezvous needs to be organised.

Pre-booking may be worthwhile if you need a particular vehicle or accessibility arrangement. Sydney Airport also offers a separate premium taxi booking service called WeKnow at T1 International Arrivals, with a desk and digital kiosks near baggage carousel 7. That service uses booking confirmation and a PIN to match passengers with a premium taxi in a priority pick-up area. It should not be confused with taking a standard taxi from the rank, and an agreed booked fare is not automatically covered by the rank-based CBD fixed-fare trial.

What if you need a larger or accessible taxi?

Kerbside supervisors can assist with five-seat vehicles, maxi taxis, station wagons for bulky luggage, vehicles with baby capsules and wheelchair-accessible taxis. Tell them what you need before joining a vehicle, particularly if a wheelchair, stroller, child restraint or several large suitcases affect vehicle suitability.

For wheelchair-accessible travel, Sydney Airport advises pre-booking where possible. An appropriate vehicle and pick-up arrangement may take additional coordination. For a qualifying trip from an airport rank to the CBD trial area, the standard AU$60 fixed fare applies to wheelchair-accessible taxis.

How do airport taxis differ from rideshare pick-ups?

Taxi ranks and rideshare pick-up locations are managed separately. With a rank taxi, you follow Taxi signage, join the queue and board a cab at the rank. With rideshare, you usually request a car using an app and follow the service-specific pick-up instructions.

At T1, UberX uses a dedicated Rank C pick-up area near Arrivals Hall B and a PIN process; other Uber products have different allocated pick-up arrangements. At T2, Uber uses the Priority Pick-up Zone, while T3 offers Uber pick-up outside the arrivals level. These Uber locations are not directions to the standard taxi rank. Always use the instructions for the service you actually booked.

What should you check before paying or reporting a problem?

  • Confirm whether your destination is within the fixed-fare CBD trial boundary or is a metered trip.
  • For a fixed-fare trip, do not accept extra airport access charges or road tolls added to the stated fare.
  • For a metered trip, make sure the meter is visible and ask about any separately charged tolls or fees.
  • Keep your receipt and, if something goes wrong, record the taxi registration plate or driver number, taxi network, date and time.

Sydney Airport directs passengers with taxi fare complaints or feedback to the Taxi Fare Hotline on 1800 500 410. Airport taxi drivers must accept short as well as long journeys; a short destination is not a reason to refuse the trip.
