The fixed taxi fare from Sydney Airport to the CBD
From 3 November 2025, an NSW Government trial has set a fixed fare for direct, non-booked taxi journeys from Sydney Airport to a defined area of the Sydney central business district (CBD). The trial is scheduled to run until 2 May 2027.
|
Taxi type |
One-way fixed fare |
When it applies |
|
Standard taxi |
AU$60 |
Direct trip from an airport taxi rank to the designated CBD zone |
|
Wheelchair-accessible taxi |
AU$60 |
Where wheelchair-accessible transport is required |
|
Maxi taxi |
AU$80 |
Five or more passengers, or a specifically requested maxi taxi, subject to the wheelchair-access exception |
These are fares for the taxi journey, not prices per passenger. The same fixed-fare arrangement applies to eligible trips from T1 International and the T2/T3 Domestic terminals. The amount does not increase simply because the trip takes longer in traffic.
Which trips qualify for the fixed airport-to-city fare?
The fixed fare applies when all three conditions are met:
- You take a taxi directly from an official taxi rank in the Sydney Airport precinct.
- Your destination is inside the designated Sydney CBD fixed-fare trial zone.
- You make one uninterrupted journey, rather than adding a separate stop or a second destination.
The trial zone has defined boundaries; it does not cover every location described by travellers or accommodation providers as “central Sydney”. Check your hotel or destination address against the official Sydney CBD fixed-fare zone map before assuming the set price applies.
The arrangement is one-way, from the airport towards the CBD. A taxi from a city hotel back to Sydney Airport is not covered by this particular fixed-fare trial. Trips to destinations outside the zone, including other Sydney suburbs, are normally metered.
What does the AU$60 or AU$80 fare include?
For a qualifying fixed-fare trip, the amount already includes the usual fare components and travel charges. You should not be charged additional airport access fees, road tolls, the Passenger Service Levy, night rates or waiting-time charges on top of the fixed price.
There are only two types of additional charge permitted under the fixed-fare rules:
- Non-cash payment surcharge: a charge may apply if you pay by credit card, EFTPOS or another non-cash method. NSW rules cap the relevant taxi payment surcharge at 5%.
- Cleaning fee: an allowed cleaning charge may apply if the passenger soils the taxi. It is not a standard airport or luggage charge.
For example, a standard taxi fare is AU$60 before any permitted card surcharge. You should not be asked to pay AU$60 plus a separate airport fee or toll for the same qualifying trip.

How are taxi fares calculated outside the fixed-fare zone?
When the airport-to-CBD trial does not apply, a taxi from the airport rank uses the regulated urban rank-and-hail fare structure. The meter calculates the distance and applicable waiting time, while authorised extras such as tolls, an airport access charge, or the Passenger Service Levy can affect the total.
The published NSW maximum urban rank-and-hail rates are as follows. These are ceiling rates for eligible metered trips, not an estimate of the airport-to-CBD fixed fare.
|
Fare component |
Published maximum urban rate |
|
Initial hire charge (flag fall) |
AU$5.17 |
|
Distance, first 12 km (day) |
AU$2.61 per km |
|
Distance, after 12 km (day) |
AU$2.37 per km |
|
Distance, first 12 km (10 pm–6 am) |
AU$3.10 per km |
|
Distance, after 12 km (10 pm–6 am) |
AU$2.82 per km |
|
Waiting time below 26 km/h |
AU$1.13 per minute |
|
Additional peak-time hire charge |
AU$2.65 on specified late-night periods |
Peak-time hiring charges apply between 10 pm and 6 am on Friday and Saturday nights and the nights before public holidays. The published urban night distance rate applies between 10 pm and 6 am. The Passenger Service Levy can add AU$1.32 including GST if passed on to the passenger. A maxi taxi may also attract a higher permitted metered fare in specified circumstances.
Because a metered fare depends on the destination, route, time of travel and traffic, there is no single reliable airport taxi price for every Sydney suburb. Ask for the applicable fare schedule before leaving the rank if your destination is outside the CBD trial zone.
Do time of day, traffic and terminal affect the city fare?
For an eligible fixed-fare journey, the charge is AU$60 or AU$80 regardless of whether you depart from T1 International, T2 Domestic or T3 Domestic. Heavy traffic and a later arrival do not turn it into a variable metered fare. They can, however, make the journey take longer.
For a journey outside the trial zone, the calculation is different. Night-time distance rates, slow traffic, a longer route and applicable tolls may all change the amount shown on the meter. The fixed-fare rule does not provide a general cap for these journeys.
How to pay the correct fare at Sydney Airport
Sydney Airport has signposted taxi ranks outside the arrivals areas of T1, T2 and T3. Taxi-rank supervisors can assist during peak periods, including when you need a larger vehicle or wheelchair access.
- Confirm that your destination is inside the designated CBD fixed-fare zone.
- At the official rank, tell the driver your destination and confirm the applicable AU$60 or AU$80 fare before departure.
- Ask whether a non-cash payment surcharge applies, or whether cash is accepted.
- Keep your receipt, especially if any charge appears that you do not recognise.
If you believe a fare was incorrectly charged, Sydney Airport directs passengers to the Taxi Fare Hotline on 1800 500 410. Keep the taxi registration or driver number, operator name, and the time and date of the trip.
Does the fixed fare apply to pre-booked airport transfers?
No. The trial applies to non-booked taxi journeys from the airport rank. It does not set the price of a pre-booked taxi, chauffeur transfer, rideshare trip or another booked passenger service. For those services, the fare is governed by the price quoted or agreed to when booking, together with the provider’s disclosed terms.
Sydney Airport also offers an in-terminal premium ride-booking service at T1. That is a separate booked product and should not be confused with joining the ordinary airport taxi rank for a fixed-fare CBD journey.
Before you leave the airport
For a direct rank taxi to the designated CBD zone, budget AU$60 for a standard vehicle or AU$80 for an applicable maxi taxi, with only a permitted non-cash surcharge or cleaning fee potentially added. If you are travelling beyond the zone or have booked a different service, confirm the price rules for that journey instead of relying on the CBD flat rate.
