Where can you buy an Opal card at Sydney Airport?
Adult and Child/Youth Opal cards are sold at the ticket windows at both Sydney Airport train stations. You do not need to travel into the city to get one.
- T1 International: buy your card at the International Airport train station, accessible from the international terminal.
- T2 and T3 Domestic: use the ticket window at Domestic Airport train station, which serves both domestic terminals.
Sydney Airport also lists WHSmith as a place to buy an Opal card. Retail stock and opening hours can vary, so the airport station ticket windows are the clearest option if you are travelling by train. For outlets elsewhere in Sydney, use the official Opal retailer finder.

Which Opal cards can you get at the airport?
The two card types available at the airport stations are Adult and Child/Youth. The right card depends on the passenger’s age and eligibility.
- Adult Opal: generally for passengers aged 16 or over who pay the full fare.
- Child/Youth Opal: generally for children aged 4–15, as well as eligible full-time NSW or ACT secondary school students aged 16 or over.
Concession and Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal cards are not issued at the airport stations. Eligible passengers need to arrange these cards online before travelling and allow time for delivery. Many eligible concession holders can instead link their entitlement to a payment card through Transport Connect before their journey, although not every concession type is supported.
How to find the airport train stations
Sydney Airport has two train stations beneath the terminal precincts. Follow the train signs after leaving the arrivals area.
From T1 International
From the T1 Arrivals area, leave through Exit A, turn right and continue towards the end of the terminal. There is also lift and escalator access near Check-In desk A. Follow signs for International Airport station.
From T2 or T3 Domestic
At either domestic terminal, look for the lift or escalator near baggage carousel 1 and follow the signs to Domestic Airport station. Both T2 and T3 use the same station.
Trains on the T8 Airport & South Line connect the airport stations with Central and other stations on the Sydney rail network. Services generally operate between about 5 am and midnight, but check the journey planner for your travel date.
How to use an Opal card on the airport train
The card works like a reusable travel ticket. You add credit, tap on at the start of your trip and tap off at the end so the correct fare can be calculated.
- Get an Adult or Child/Youth Opal card at an airport station ticket window or another participating outlet.
- Add enough credit for your journey. A minimum AU$35 top-up applies when you obtain or top up an Opal card at an airport train station.
- Tap the card on an Opal reader at the airport station before boarding. Wait for the reader to confirm the tap.
- Catch your train, then tap off with the same Opal card at your destination station.
Each passenger needs their own Opal card or eligible contactless payment method. Do not use one card to tap on for several people.
What does it cost to use an Opal card at Sydney Airport?
The physical Opal card is free. The amount you pay when getting one is travel credit, not a card purchase fee. However, airport train journeys cost more than an ordinary suburban train trip because the airport stations charge an access fee on top of the train fare.
Transport for NSW lists the following station access fees for Opal and contactless journeys as at November 2026:
|
Fare category |
Airport station access fee |
|
Adult |
AU$18.61 |
|
Child/Youth |
AU$16.64 |
|
Eligible Concession and Senior/Pensioner |
AU$16.64 |
These amounts are the airport station access fees only; the normal train fare is additional. Different access-fee arrangements apply for short trips between the two airport stations or between an airport station and Mascot or Green Square. Airport station access fees have their own weekly cap and do not count towards the usual Opal daily or weekly travel caps.
For an exact total and the latest published fees, use the Transport for NSW airport travel information and Trip Planner before travelling.
Can you use a bank card instead of buying an Opal card?
Yes. If you are paying an Adult fare, you can tap on and tap off with an eligible contactless American Express, Mastercard or Visa debit or credit card, or a linked phone or watch. There is no need to set up an Opal account for standard Adult contactless travel.
Using the same eligible card or device consistently gives you the same Adult Opal fares and travel benefits, including the same airport station access fee. Do not tap on with your physical bank card and tap off with a phone, even if both use the same underlying account; use the same payment method for the whole journey.
If you need a Child/Youth fare, use a Child/Youth Opal card. Concession and Senior/Pensioner travellers should check whether their entitlement is supported through Transport Connect and link it before travelling. Overseas-issued bank cards may incur a foreign transaction fee from the card issuer.
Where else can you use your Opal card?
An Opal card is not limited to the airport train. You can reuse it for eligible trains, metro, buses, ferries and light rail services across Sydney and other areas of the NSW Opal network. Keep the card if you expect to travel around the city after arriving.
If you are taking a public bus rather than the airport train, you can also use an Opal card or an accepted contactless payment method. The airport train station access fee applies to the airport train stations, not to an ordinary public bus journey.
