Where is baggage claim at Sydney Airport?
Baggage claim is located within the arrivals area of the terminal where your flight lands. Look for signs marked “Baggage Claim” or “Baggage Reclaim” after leaving the aircraft. Sydney Airport has separate international and domestic terminals.

The carousel allocated to your flight is not fixed. Check the arrivals screens for your flight number and departure city, then follow the displayed carousel number. If the information is unclear, ask the airline or its ground-handling staff.
How to collect your checked baggage
Most passengers can collect their bags by following the same basic steps, regardless of their terminal.
- Follow the baggage claim signs. If you arrived internationally, complete the required passport-control step first.
- Find your flight on the baggage information screens. Match the airline, flight number, and origin before choosing a carousel.
- Wait for your bag at the assigned carousel. Delivery may begin after passengers reach the area, and the assigned belt may change.
- Check the bag before taking it. Compare its appearance and baggage tag with your receipt so you do not collect a similar suitcase by mistake.
- Confirm that all checked items have arrived. Then follow the appropriate exit route; international travelers still need to complete border and biosecurity clearance.
If you traveled with carry-on baggage only, you can skip the carousel. International arrival procedures still apply even when you have no checked bags.
What happens after international baggage claim at T1?
For international arrivals, collecting your suitcase is not the final step before entering Australia. The usual sequence is passport control, baggage reclaim, and then the required customs and biosecurity clearance before entering the public arrivals hall.
Complete the Incoming Passenger Card as required and declare items that must be declared. Border and biosecurity officers may inspect your checked bags and carry-on items. Food, plant material, animal products, and other regulated goods may require a declaration or assessment; do not assume that an item is exempt simply because it is packed in checked luggage.
Keep all your belongings with you until you finish these checks. Friends, family, and drivers should plan to meet you outside the controlled arrivals area, after you have cleared the exit procedures.

Where do oversized bags and special items go?
Oversized or specially handled items may not appear on the normal carousel. Depending on your airline and the item, equipment such as a stroller, sports bag, or other large case may be delivered to a separate collection point or handed over by ground staff.
Check the signs near the assigned carousel and ask an airline baggage representative where to collect the item. If you need help lifting or retrieving baggage, request assistance from your airline. Do not leave the reclaim area without checking on an item that has not appeared.
What if your baggage is delayed, missing, damaged, or not yours?
The airline—not Sydney Airport’s general lost property service—is responsible for handling reports about checked luggage that is delayed, missing, damaged, or collected by mistake. An airline may use a ground-handling company to manage these cases.
- Report the problem promptly to your airline’s baggage desk or ground handler, preferably before leaving the baggage claim area.
- Have your boarding pass, checked-bag receipt or tag number, flight details, and a description of the item ready.
- For a missing or delayed bag, provide reliable contact information and a delivery address if requested. Keep the case or report reference for follow-up.
- For damage or a bag that is not yours, inform the airline staff and follow their instructions rather than trying to resolve the mix-up yourself.
If you have already left the terminal, contact the airline through its official baggage support channel. For an item left on the aircraft, contact the airline as well. Sydney Airport lost property is a different service for items misplaced in airport-controlled areas.
Do connecting passengers need to collect their luggage?
Whether you reclaim bags in Sydney depends on the direction of your journey and the airline’s transfer arrangements.
- International to domestic: Arriving passengers must collect their checked baggage at T1 and complete the required passport-control, customs, and biosecurity procedures before transferring to T2 or T3. Follow your airline’s instructions for rechecking the bag.
- Other connections: Ask your airline whether your bags are checked through to your final destination or must be collected and rechecked in Sydney. Do not rely only on the fact that both flights appear on one booking.
T1 is separate from the T2/T3 domestic terminals, and passengers cannot walk between the international and domestic terminal precincts. Allow for baggage collection, arrival clearance, terminal transfer, and any required check-in when planning a connection.
When can you leave baggage claim and meet your pickup?
Domestic passengers can head toward the public arrivals area once their luggage is accounted for. International passengers can meet their ride only after completing the required arrival checks and exiting the controlled area.
A flight’s landing time is not the same as the time you will be ready for pickup. Walking to baggage claim, waiting for luggage, and—at T1—border and biosecurity processing all affect when you reach the public exit. Confirm your terminal and meeting location with the person collecting you, and update them if your bag is delayed.
