What Time Do Sydney Airport Terminals Open and Close?
Sydney Airport opening hours by terminal
Sydney Airport publishes the following daily terminal hours for passengers. All times are local Sydney time.
|
Terminal |
Opening time |
Closing time |
|
T1 International |
3:00 a.m.* |
11:00 p.m. |
|
T2 Domestic |
4:00 a.m. |
11:00 p.m. |
|
T3 Domestic |
4:00 a.m. |
11:00 p.m. |
*Sydney Airport gives two different T1 opening times on its official website: the site-wide hours listing says 3:00 a.m., while its dedicated opening-hours page says 2:30 a.m. The 11:00 p.m. closing time is consistent. If you need access before 3:00 a.m., confirm the current arrangements directly with the airport or your airline.
Are Sydney Airport terminals open overnight?
No. Sydney Airport says its passenger terminals close to the public overnight for security reasons. T1 International closes at 11:00 p.m. and reopens in the early morning; T2 and T3 Domestic are closed to the public from 11:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m.
Do not plan to spend the night inside a passenger terminal while waiting for an early flight. If your schedule involves an overnight gap, arrange accommodation in advance. Hotels are available near the airport, and overnight access rules for individual accommodation providers should be checked separately.
When do check-in, security, and border processing begin?
The opening time of a terminal is not necessarily the opening time of your airline’s check-in counter, bag drop, security screening lane, lounge, restaurant, or store. These services can follow different schedules.
For T1, Sydney Airport’s detailed hours page says Customs begins processing departing passengers at 4:00 a.m. This is later than either published T1 building-opening time, so entering the terminal early does not mean you can immediately complete all departure formalities.
For departure planning, Sydney Airport recommends arriving as close as possible to three hours before international flights and two hours before domestic flights, unless your airline advises otherwise. Check your carrier’s check-in and bag-drop deadlines rather than assuming the general terminal hours are sufficient.

Plan early-morning departures and late-night arrivals
For an early-morning departure
- Check which terminal your flight uses before arranging transport.
- Compare the terminal opening time with your airline’s recommended arrival time and check-in opening time.
- For T1 access before 3:00 a.m., verify the 2:30 a.m./3:00 a.m. discrepancy rather than relying on one page.
For a late-night arrival or connection
A late scheduled arrival or delay does not make the terminal a place to wait overnight. Confirm your actual flight status and onward arrangements with your airline. If you need to transfer between international and domestic terminals, check the operating times of the transport option you intend to use; terminal opening hours do not establish shuttle, train, or bus availability.
How to confirm terminal hours before traveling
Check the airport’s published hours and your airline’s instructions close to your travel date, particularly if you plan to enter T1 before 3:00 a.m., travel on an unusually early or late service, or need special assistance. If your plan depends on a shop, lounge, or airline counter, check that service’s own hours separately.
View Sydney Airport’s detailed terminal opening-hours page and compare it with the airport’s current site-wide opening-hours listing if your journey depends on the earliest T1 access time.
